Zydus Cadila’s DNA based vaccine ZyCoV-D becomes the first vaccine to receive emergency use authorization for children above 12 years of age. The three-dose vaccine has an efficacy rate of 66.6 per cent as per the trials conducted across the nation.
Zydus’ needle free vaccine is only the second vaccine that is being produced in India after covaxin to get EUA and the sixth vaccine to be authorised in India. The drugmaker plans to manufacture about 120 million doses a a year of thr world’s first plasmid DNA shot.
The study for the vaccine was being carried out during the peak of the second wave of COVID-19 in India which reaffirms it efficiency against the coronavirus mutants strains, especially the delta variant originated in Maharashtra. The vaccine has shown good stability and can be easily stored and transported.
