With a daily count of over 30,000 cases for the fourth consecutive day, Kerala accounts for around 70% of he total COVID-19 cases in the country. Active cases are over 2 lakhs and the latest positivity rate recorded on a day was 18.67%.
“Since the relaxations in lockdown, there has been surge in cases. It was further increased after Onam,” says Vijayan on Saturday.Night curfew has again been imposed in the state with the plummeting number of cases. Mass gatherings are strictly forbidden.
Due to the ongoing surge in the cases, the state has adopted a new covid testing strategy and released a set of directives for the people according to the Health Minister Veena George. This strategy will be helpful in assessing the new centres of covid in the state. Based on the vaccination data in a district, individuals showing symptoms of the infection are being taken for RT-pcr tests. Other than this, antigen tests will also be conducted in places where there is more social contact as part of the Sentinel Surveillance. Random testing will be avoided in individuals who have completed two months after the recovery from COVID-19 and the ones who have received both the doses of the vaccine and shows no symptoms. Quality checks of the test kits will also be done by the officers from the Health Department.

In these tough times where the healthcare system has been working tirelessly to prevent the spread of the disease, Kerala High court has asked the state government to take measures to prevent attacks on healthcare workers and make their safety a priority to continue in this fight against COVID. The central government has also mentioned that the coming months will be crucial in this pandemic and all the festivals should only be celebrated with COVID-19 appropriate behaviour by the citizens to contain the infection as well to avoid a possible threat of the third wave.
