A 12 year old boy, Muhammad Hashim dies of Nipah virus in Kozhikode on Sunday morning. The Central Government has confirmed the case and a team of National Centre for Disease Control was rushed to kerala for technical support.
Kerala’s health minister, Veena George has also went to assess the situation. A team including health inspector CK Valsan (Feroke municipality), VK Pramod, Junior health inspectors K Shameer (Tanur municipality), PS Daison, Biju Jayaram, ambulance driver Ranjith and volunteer NV Abdurahman coordinated the procedures for the funeral on Sunday.
The boy was admitted to a private hospital after showing symptoms of the Nipah virus infection and was undergoing treatment. His samples were tested positive for Nipah virus in the Pune National Institute of Virology. No other family member of the boy has shown any symptoms yet.
“ We have formed teams to handle the situation. Contact tracing and other measures have already been initiated. As of now, there is no need to panic, but we need to exercise caution,” says Kerala Health Minister, Veena George.
The funeral was carried out in the presence of health department officials with close relatives of the deceased. The same team that was deployed in 2018 for the prevention of the virus were called. All the protocols were followed regarding the sanitisation of the place and safety of the ones in attendance.
